What’s Wrong With Buying A Home Without Permits?

One of the most common questions I get asked from a buyer buying an older home is if a home has permits for any of the remodels or additions they notice, buyer beware.  Sometimes it’s not a big deal, other times it may be.  I remember looking at a home to purchase and the homeowner did extensive remodeling and additions without permits and suposedly his wife worked in the building department for the County.  Buyers should be aware of some of the pitfalls if they do purchase a home without permits.   This article provides some insight on the problems.  I am not a contractor but these points brought out in the article are usually the points I usually bring out as well.  In San Jose as well as most cities in the area you can look up the permits applied and signed off for each home.
